Just like its Crianza counterpart, this wine showcases all the classic features that make Rioja reds loved the world over. It is also like the Crianza in that it was destemmed by hand to ensure inclusion and concentration of the flavors that would be removed if processing occurred mechanically. The vines are on average 5 years older than the Crianza and oak aging occurs for 18 months, 3 months longer than the Crianza and 6 months longer than the minimum required to be labeled Reserva. This wine also spends 5 months tank aging, but after that, it rests for 2 full years bottle aging before release. The nose on this is also dotted with hints of wood, but there is a distinct musky earthiness that is not found in the Crianza. Flavors are also deeper with licorice and leather dominating the palate while spicy currants linger on the finish. This wine will pair well with hard cheese platters and hearty flavorful meat dishes. It is more readily enjoyed accompanying food and can be decanted for a bit.
