Although this wine hails from Rioja’s southwestern neighbor, Castilla y Leon, it exhibits quintessential Rioja aromas and flavors, uses the flagship Rioja grape, Tempranillo and is crafted utilizing the standard Rioja winemaking practice of oak aging. The vines that produce these powerhouse grapes are over a century old making the yield extremely low and the quality extremely high. The wine is aged 15 months in French oak creating toasty almond flavors. An additional 8 months of bottle aging add further depth and complexity. The resulting wine is dense and powerful with spicebox on the nose, licorice on the palate and a lengthy black fruit finish. Pair this wine with pastas, flavorful ethnic dishes, hearty meat stews or charcuterie platters.
